United for Homeownership: Reflections from the National Association of Realtors Conference

This past week, I had the privilege of attending the National Association of Realtors® (NAR) conference in Boston, where more than 11,000 of my colleagues gathered to take part in discussions, educational sessions, and collaborative conversations about the future of our industry. As I walked through the conference halls and spoke with other real estate professionals, I felt the powerful energy that comes when thousands of people with a shared mission come together. Despite a year filled with challenges, from market fluctuations to policy shifts, our commitment to real estate and the American Dream remains steadfast.

The American Dream of homeownership has always been deeply rooted in our nation’s identity. It represents not only a personal achievement but also a crucial pathway to building financial stability, generational wealth, and community strength. Yet, today, the path to homeownership is increasingly difficult, especially for younger generations facing mounting financial pressures, fluctuating interest rates, and a challenging housing market. We as an industry are here to tackle these issues head-on, to ensure that homeownership remains accessible, and to defend it as one of the most significant wealth-building tools available to Americans.

The theme that resonates strongly with me—and was echoed by many other professionals at the conference—is the understanding that Realtors aren’t just facilitators of transactions; we are advocates, educators, and stewards of a fundamental American value. Each of us plays a role in supporting not just buyers and sellers, but entire communities. As we strive to empower people through real estate, we are actively contributing to their well-being and financial futures.

This year has tested all of us. Rising interest rates, limited housing inventory, regulation changes and economic uncertainties have brought a new level of complexity to our work. Yet, what I saw at the NAR conference was resilience. Realtors from across the country showed up to enhance their education, share ideas, and support one another. It was a reminder that no matter how turbulent the year has been, we remain dedicated to leading our industry forward. By continuously honing our skills, adapting to new challenges, and advocating for sound policies, we’re preparing ourselves to better serve our clients, our colleagues, and our communities.

As a mom and a leader in real estate, this mission hits home for me in a very personal way. I am passionate about real estate not just because it’s my profession, but because I believe in its power to provide security and opportunity for future generations. My children, and countless others of their generation, deserve the same opportunities for financial growth and stability that homeownership has provided for so many before them. They deserve a world where owning a home is still achievable, not just a distant dream. I see it as my responsibility to ensure that the policies we advocate for today protect this right for them tomorrow.

Throughout the conference, I was inspired by my fellow Realtors who shared this sense of duty. From seasoned professionals to new agents, everyone here is committed to keeping the American Dream alive. We aren’t just responding to market trends; we are actively shaping the future of homeownership. We are focused on solutions that go beyond today’s challenges, from building pathways for affordable housing to advocating for fair lending practices and educating the next generation of buyers.

This dedication to learning, advocating, and growing our skill sets is the hallmark of a Realtor. At NAR, we’re not just talking about the latest industry trends or tools; we’re discussing the larger purpose that binds us all—the importance of keeping homeownership attainable, valuable, and beneficial for all. Our work is about more than contracts and closings; it’s about being a source of support, guidance, and protection for people navigating one of the biggest financial decisions of their lives.

Leaving the NAR conference, I feel reinvigorated in my commitment to lead in ways that empower, protect, and advocate for our clients and colleagues. As I head back to my daily work, I carry with me a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper well of knowledge, and a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. Together, we are united in preserving and promoting homeownership—the cornerstone of the American Dream—for generations to come.
