The Heart of a Realtor: Embracing the Nobility of Our Profession

There are leaders in the real estate industry who have come before me and will come after me, pouring their heart and soul into the lives of those around them—clients, customers, and colleagues alike. Realtors are individuals who build businesses that support our local communities and economy.

The Noble Work of Realtors

I've witnessed Realtors volunteering their time to uplift their communities, whether it's at the local food bank, supporting children with cancer, flying to Ukraine in times of deep need, cleaning up camps to prepare for children facing terminal illness, building homes for those in need, spending their hard-earned money to support the homeless, or dedicating their lives to fighting for affordable and attainable housing. The dedication I see every single day from my colleagues is nothing short of inspiring. The work we do is noble.

My Journey in Real Estate

I fell into the real estate industry because it seemed like an “easy” way to support my first child as a single mom. Boy, was I wrong about the easy part. What we do is hard. Over the 19 years I have chosen this career, it has brought me down a path I never could have imagined.

It is a fascinating industry where many competitors come together to build a community through their brokerages and Realtor associations. I have found that this is not just a great way to support my family; it’s a fulfilling role where I see goodness in people at all levels. I have the pleasure of working with professionals who seek to grow personally and professionally through the work they do. I get to witness relationships being built among individuals who might not come together otherwise. I see others come together to bring two parties into agreement on homes. I’ve seen tears at closing tables as one family shares their memories built over decades with a new family, hoping they will build and share just as many warm memories as they did. This is what being a Realtor is. That’s who we “R”.

Rising Above Challenges

The recent news in our industry greatly disappoints me. As a woman, a mother to both sons and a daughter, a wife, and a leader to other women both in my brokerage and our Realtor family, it disappoints me that sexual harassment is at its highest levels. It’s discouraging that some leaders have allowed their own personal agendas to tarnish our Realtor name—a name that I carry with pride for all the reasons I listed above.

However, I choose to rise above this mark on our industry and to stand strong in support of all that is good. I commend those who speak up. A good friend of mine recently said, “Heavy is the head that wears the crown.” This couldn’t be more true than now.

To my fellow Realtors, let's continue to strive for excellence, support one another, and work towards creating a positive image for our industry. We have the power to change perceptions and show the true value of what we do. Let's prove that we are leaders who genuinely care and are dedicated to making a difference.
